    BOJO off to court

    https://news.sky.com/story/boris-joh...nduct-11730747

It's about he was held accountable for his Brexit campaign lies.

Boris Johnson is to be summonsed to court to face accusations of misconduct in a public office, over claims he made that the UK sent the EU £350m a week.

Clearly he lied. Whether it amounts to misconduct in public office is a different question and one for the courts. It would be surprising if it is misconduct, as he wasn't in the campaign in any ministerial role. But we will see.

These are the guys bringing the private prosecution. Looks like they a playing the role of the CPS and it will be bought to court as a criminal offence under common law. Which typically means who has the best lawyers wins. Setting a precedent for lying over financial figures could have massive ramifications for politicians going forward not just in this country but in the common wealth where uk common law is used.

I wouldn't be surprised if the CPS takes it over.

Private Prosecutions | The Crown Prosecution Service

"the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has power under section 6(2) POA 1985 to take over private prosecutions;"

"However, there will be instances where it is appropriate for the CPS to exercise the Director's powers under section 6(2) POA 1985, either to continue the prosecution or to discontinue or stop it."

Is somebody still claiming that the UK sends the EU £350 million per week?

                  "debits"?

Section 9 seems to deal in trade.

                    The 2017 version is here:
                    Download as PDF

Total debits to the EU in 2016 £13.885 billion (approx £267million a week)
Balance (UK net position with EU institutions) £9.441 billion (approx £181million a week)

Or, to put it another way: About £150 per person per year, or £3 per person per week

And if we compare the balance with the total government spend (approx £772 billion in 2016), we get a figure of 1.2%.

Yes, that's 1.2% of the government's spend goes to the EU.
