Default New Director General of Trade

Sabine Weyand moves from being Barnier’s deputy chief negotiator in Brexit to the position of Director General of EU Trade.

Weyand will be responsible for negotiating any future trade deal with the U.K....

Cecilia Malmstrom on Twitter: "Very happy to welcome @WeyandSabine as new director general for @Trade_EU as from the first of June. Looking forward working together."

Let the chlorinated chicken flow freely over the open UK/EU border in Ireland after Hard Brexit.

I was under the impression that the EU would force Ireland to maintain a border with the UK...

Then it would be Ireland that break it and not the UK.

That's OK then. One rule for all, excepts when it doesn't suit our purpose then the rules don't apply.

I believe that a border is likely to be installed by the EU/Ireland. However, by definition a border separates two countries, and on the EU/Ireland side they only need to control what comes in. Anything that passes the other way (people, untaxed goods, goods that don’t meet quality or safety standards) is the UK’s problem.

Add on top of that the possibility that if the U.K. leaves the border open to the EU, the USA and China seeking reparations under WTO rules, it’s not likely that the U.K. will leave the border open for long.

The British press will try to spin this as “the EU put a border up” which will suitably enrage/delight the gammons (present company included), but the rest of the world knows that it’s the U.K. leaving, it’s the UK’s problem to sort out the British border on the island of Ireland.
