Although the work performed at the neighbours wasn't at large a construction as ours, perhaps our job was just too big for him and he found himself our of his depth. He made some basic errors, like using 3.7Nm blocks on the external walls, and he subcontracted the block work to another building co AJ Barnham (you can find them on facebook too) who clearly didn't have a scooby how to build block work walls.
Insurance work? If that didn't ring any very loud alarm bells it should have done. Insurance companies like cheap (I had that happen once - their "preferred contractor" dug up half the floor to trace a leak, which actually originated in a different room).
His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...

If I was spending £34k on a renovation project, I would at the very least be doing some background checks and wanting examples of their previous work. I certainly wouldn't be going on holiday and leaving them to it. Not saying they deserved it but they should probably take some responsibility..

For something like that I'd definitely hire an architect, to use reputable builders and keep them in line, although I suppose that would also add to the cost.
