        The precedent is that the speaker votes with the government in the event of a dead-heat. In this case the motion was brought by the opposition, so the speaker (probably through gritted teeth) voted against.
        His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...

          Very true. It does make me wonder (not for the first time) why there's been so much heartache about the WA when, assumably, any flaws or things that turn out to be not as expected, can be resolved in the future
