The idiotic directive to limit the power consumption of household appliances. Which means it takes longer to boil a kettle, toast some toast, vacuum the house, and there's probably more. So by limiting the power consumption of a device, you need to use it for longer, thus ultimately not saving any power. Big gold star to the fookwit who came up with that one.

Lightbulbs. They all now have to be LED. Which is fine, except they cost ten times more than the old ones. Which lasted for years. The LED ones are supposed to last much longer than the old ones, so that means they should last forever - in human terms. Except they don't. (The more expensive the brand - Phillips, I'm looking at you here - the more likely they are to pack up after just a few months.) So the small saving in electricity costs is instantly negated by the huge cost in replacing a lightbulb which would have cost a quid, but now costs nearly a tenner. Nice.

The directive demanding 10% of all fuel has to be biofuel by 2020. I have no idea whether that target was met, but I do know half* of south-east Asia has been burnt down to plant palm-oil**, for the purpose of selling it to EU nations at over-inflated prices, just to meet an arbitrary target which was fookwittery of the highest order in the first place.

You must just have really crap electrical gear in your household as I personally haven't seen either of the above. I have a new kettle and toaster to replace mine which were about 15 years old and they are definitely quicker, the kettle especially. The LEDs with which I replaced the crappy energy saving bulbs 4 years ago are still fine....
