    • UK trade balance with EU 1999-2019 | Statista

I've read what Macron has said, he needs to appear to support the French fishing interests, he'd be stupid not to, but ultimately not be the one who gets blamed for blocking a free trade deal. That's what I mean by noise, it's not necessarily what is being discussed behind closed doors.

I think we agree a free trade deal is good, let's hope we get one.

That's the UK's trade with the EU, not the other way round.

If you own one car and it's a BMW, then 100% of your car trade is with BMW.
But that does not mean that 100% of BMW's global car trade is with you.

        I'm lost !?

The EU, taken as a whole is the UK’s largest trading partner. In 2019, UK exports to the EU were £300 billion (43% of all UK exports). UK imports from the EU were £372 billion (51% of all UK imports).

          Correct.

And from the EU's side, the UK was responsible for about 20% of the EU's exports. £372 billion out of €2,132 billion.
80% of the EU's exports do not go to the UK.

If the EU had to make a free trade deal, why would they do it with the uk? Surely would be better to make a deal with a bigger economy?

Same reason why the uk hasn't been able to secure a deal with the US; why would the US want to make a deal that grants them access to the little uk market when they could pursue a deal with the EU and have access to a much bigger market?

At the end of the day, nobody gives a feck about the uk

Ok I get your point. The EU could choose to cut off the nose to spite the face. Time will tell, doubt it myself.

                    No, you've ignored my point.

The UK is the one that voted to leave. Who is cutting off whose nose? The ones that voted to leave.

Time will tell, though, if any are smart enough to enter into meaningful negotiations with the EU. Doubt it myself.
