Discrepancies between job title on cv and actual job title

As part of contracting sometimes we are asked (or voluntarily) perform roles different from actual job title. So what if cv job title does not match with actual job title during background checks? Wonder anyone ever faced such situation.
How would you respond to such queries?

Would you put cv job title in background screening form or actual job title?

I personally don't assume a job title at a customer, I just refer to myself as 'consultant' as that's what the customer bought me in for, I even put my LTD name in brackets , situations are different I suppose, I like to keep that distance though and operate like a business selling services.

I agree with your approach but to get your cv noticed by agency , sometimes I do use job title as per the role, otherwise there is risk agent wouldnt put forward your cv. But with this, the problem comes during background check .Not sure whether my explanation will be accepted or not?

So you lied on your CV. Can't see why the client would have a problem with that

Not a lie but the role I actually performed in in my previous job. Sometimes in long contract yu do perform roles different from the actual role. In such case what role would yu put on cv -the actual one or the role yu ve performed?

I'm a Service Management Consultant on all of my positions although I might have been called a BA or a Process Analyst in the role. Provided you were good at your specialism and get good references from each client they won't even remember (or care) what title you were brought in as.

This is bad. Stop doing it.

Well that said.. it was bad, you shouldn't have done it... might not matter in the future the way things are looking.

As long as it isn't misleading or trying to over egg the role you played I would have no problem putting down a title other than the official one. For me, Consultant is fine. Covers plenty of bases and if you ever were to be pulled up on it then it's explainable.

If you start claiming you were head of national systems or whatever then, of course, that's a different story.

Job titles make me laugh. For most roles they don't reflect what you do and if you were to stick rigidly to your title you'd never get the real work done.

At the same time to get past the agents your last job title must be identical to the role you are going for. I can understand why that is but it's a silly, wasteful game.
