    Lunch expenses

    Hi,

What do you all do around lunch expenses, do you claim them? I've asked my accountant but he's given me a wishy washy answer which is disappointing as he's part of the high priced specialists that's generally recommended.

I commute to client site everyday of the week and I've only been in this location for 5 months so not affected by the 24 month rule.

A lot of the older links talk about working away rather than commuting.

    I don't claim unless it's a business meeting lunch.

I don't claim for lunch and never have in 15 years.

Are you aware of the savings involved when claiming a 3 quid lunch?

On a £3 lunch for 5 month about £60 shaved off the CT tax bill...
Though that's off the top of my head, not counting days off and assuming 4 5day weeks in a month.

But you can claim £5 a day can't you?

I'm lucky enough that I can get home from my current client for my lunch... So I'm not sure!

The only time I have ever claimed lunch is when working away from home.
In this instance the client was paying all expenses on top of my day rate and agreed to pay for all meals during the negotiation.

As a rule of thumb if you are claiming for business travel (mileage and/or accommodation) then it follows that lunch is ok too, as are other expenses incurred wholly as a result. Receipts are required. It is NOT a flat sum allowance. Some argue that "commuting" (as you put it) is not business travel, in which case you wouldn't be claiming the mileage either.

Another matter is whether it's really worth the effort of collecting all those till receipts and entering them into your spreadsheet/online portal.
