    SC clearance contract

Waiting for SC clearance to be sorted out; contract says start date: 1st of July.
What is your experience in this situation?

Did you get paid, while doing work which did not required clearance; were you even allowed on site? Etc...

Depends. I’ve been on secured sites “at risk” on two occasions while clearance was transferred from previous List X companies.

The only difference pre-and-post transfer was access to server rooms.

First time was three weeks, second was two.

I was provisionally cleared by the police to work on their sites using my new police clearance but I was still waiting at the time for my national clearance to go through. It meant I was allowed to work on site but certain areas that had national clearance marked materials was off limits so I was mostly just doing box shifting until it came through 3 weeks later.

From my own personal experience, take it was a pinch of salt when agencies give you start dates on SC cleared contracts as vetting takes precedence over some agency consultant trying to chase their commission by throwing dates to you.

        Thanks for your insight, guys.
The client has actually agreed the start date at the interview, and they knew I didn't have any clearance.

In the mean time they did get in touch to ask for details to start the whole process. I will be sent some forms, but they couldn't tell me if I will get them before or after I start.

Good news that the end client has at least got the ball rolling with the paperwork, if you talk to vetting you are perfectly in your right to ask for the SLA in working days for your vetting (FYI it's only a very rough indicator but it can save endless headaches trying to contact them over and over and you can make a adhoc excel sheet covering the sla days so you can have a idea of time frames)

I wouldn't worry about it. One of my colleagues who previously held SC returned from a stint in Europe and had to re-apply. He started here before the SC came through.

Another guy who had not previously held SC was working here for 3 months before his SC came through. He was a permy though, but that shouldn't make a difference.

As long as you've submitted the forms correctly you should be fine. They're a bit intrusive, but don't worry about that, they are designed to test your honesty and integrity. Questions on your credit history, and criminal convictions etc, just declare everything and you'll be OK. Don't be tempted to hide anything.

Some companies won't even let you onsite without the SC in place! Some companies will operate 'at risk'.

It all depends on the company, what you are doing, their risk attitude etc.

Really? Have never encountered it myself, but will take your work for it as I've no cause to doubt you. I know that many ensure a constant escort and do not permit access to certain sensitive areas. I wasn't aware of any that point blank refused entry.
As you say, it depends what you are doing. Restrictions are greater again if you require DV clearance, as applied by companies like AWE and MIx etc.
Original reply remains valid. In my experience, people who start work in List-x companies prior to gaining clearance are allowed access to site and do get paid.

You're right, the particular 'site' I'm referring too isn't your usual site so it's probably an unfair statement to make.

I've worked in typical List-X that will allow someone to start and will pay them, mostly so they don't lose the resource whilst they also get the clearance sorted but other times the resource has been told to wait on the sideline pending clearance. It's all based on whether they were touching sensitive data.

                    This ^

I started before my clearance was even applied for. They just had processes to keep me away from data etc until I was cleared.
