Posting on Linked in when looking for new contracts.
It's helped me. I change my 'tag line' to "super awesome person available immediately" , pop up a post to say I'm available, and also set a few background settings that alert recruiters. Most of the time my network comes through with a job before an agent does but the effect of publicising it is the same.

If its good enough for you Miss Muck...
then its got to be good enough for me.
If only there was an option on your LinkedIn account to alert people you are looking for work?
Not entirely sure how effective that is but that is the background settings I was referring to. Doesn't hurt to do the other updates too for thems that don't have recruiter accounts
is this a thing that is done ?
does it look needy or does it not really matter as long as you score a gig.
If you've not been managing your LinkedIn network properly then it's not really going to help. If you've used it like FB and just added every Tom dick and Harry and been linking pointless vids and memes you've diluted your audience. The idea is to network, not just bung a desperate ask for a gig. I'd imagine the fact you are having to ask this means you've got a bit more work to get your base network set up first.

Do it 100%, also do this:
- make sure you have a good network, don't connect with everyone - focus on ex-colleague's you have worked with AND want to work with again and recruiters specialising in your area
- have relevant skills on your profile, those REXX scripts from 1996 aren't useful and just attract keyword warriors
- Post to say what you are looking for and where
- What previous people said, change your settings to say that you are looking, what for and where
Getting contract jobs is about networking, meeting people and getting roles that way. Through your contacts you will get bigger rates on more favourable terms almost every time.
