i think one of the problems we're starting to see a lot now & in coming weeks too is that agencies could potentially have mixed up PAYE and FTC.

This happens when some of the agencies (especially the smaller ones - mainly because they trying to keep you as a resource on their books and not loose you to an Umbrella) are starting to offer these options going forward. They trying to put in place the PAYE model but offering half of the permie benefits to you. And they don't know what their doing and they likely don't know their stuff full on. Afterall, this is new territory for them.

    it's just a shambles really.

I'm not surprised your client/agency say that? By the way it looks now, mostly (especially for working in the big banks ) it seems its Agencies vs Umbrella for our signatures.

For your client, it's lilkey they have under-the-table handshake agreement with whoever is providing the FTC to you.

Im in a similar position to you. My client has an under-the-table handshake agreement with a particular Umbrella and have been advised its much more beneficial to go Umbrella than go PAYE or FTC with my current agency. My current agency obviously wouldn't be happy - they would loose me as a resource to this Umbrella.
