Indeed there are plenty of opportunities for good contractors always has been and always will be. Obviously things are currently tight but then so were they from time to time over the last 25 years and has nothing to do with Wipro or InfoSys.

It does at the lower levels. If you are in the "I'm alright jack" mindset, then IR35, Covid, and outsourced/offshore IT is no threat.

But stupid management & govt decisions and blanket IT policies, don't improve the prospects for those starting out in IT in this country

The number of IT professionals employed in the UK has almost doubled over the last 10-12 years, so I don't think there is a lack of opportunities for young people. The average starting salary is £26000 in 2020 and is comparable with the legal profession, where there is no competition from offshored suppliers. If you check out InfoSys, is a publically traded company, their profits dropped last year so this doesn't really fit your suggestion that they're gouging their customers.

There are some good grads, some poor grds. It's down to the quality of lecturing.

Early in my contracting career, was asked to look at a system developed by a lecturer who turned contractor. Didn't scale, didn't perform. Overly bloated, wanted to display his knowledge by throwing every possible design pattern in.

Degrees are simple something HR wonks get a stiffy over. IMO, it's far more important to get off your arse and improve yourself continually to keep abreast with - and ahead of - trends.

There are more jobs and more graduates. It's an expanding field. There are also a high number of law graduates who are unemployed.

but all relative, 5% after 15 months is still low. 95% found their dream job with well above average graduate salaries.

I'd say there are plenty of UK consultancies heavily recruiting grads. Pay 'em cheap, get them on client site and charge a lot more...
