      What's with all the talk of the islands breaking away? Are they, like Scotland, a separate entity which is part of a greater union, in which case there is precedent? Or is it people just being dumb?

          Its called balkanisation. I doubt it could happen in Scotland, but if it did happen it doesn't necessarily involve referendums. Lots of violent lobbing of sharp things at each other and demanding new state lines be drawn can work too.
