Is it the US where the pumps have/had a trickle mode, so you could go in to use the restroom while it filled up? Or have I imagined that?

I believe the flow can be adjusted. I complained about the slow flow once but the disinterested witch told me it had just been turned down because people were complaining they'd put more in than they wanted to. The moral of the story being to only fill up in affluent places where that's not a concern.

One thing I have recently realised after many years of driving, is the "fuel pump light" on the most dashboards usually have a little arrow pointing to which ever side has the petrol cap, handy to know when using hire cars
