Tory welfare cuts will destroy benefit of new living wage, research shows

"A record 6.5 million people – almost a quarter of UK workers – will remain trapped on poverty pay next year, despite George Osborne’s 50p-an-hour increase in the national minimum wage, according to research by the Resolution Foundation thinktank.

Adam Corlett, Resolution’s economic analyst, said: “While the chancellor’s new wage floor will give a welcome boost to millions of Britain’s lowest-paid staff, it cannot guarantee a basic standard of living or compensate for the £12bn of welfare cuts that were announced alongside it.”

The chancellor announced the introduction of a “national living wage” in his July budget. It was an eyecatching bid for the votes of Britain’s workers and will see the statutory minimum pay rate for over-25s increase from £6.70 an hour to £7.20 next April – and to about £9 an hour by 2020.

But the new national minimum will still fall short of an actual “living wage”, calculated on the basis of the cost of basic essentials, including housing, food and transport, that has been the centrepiece of a long-running public campaign."

AtW's comment - the best part of this con by Cons is that on one hand they reduce taxpayer handouts, but on the other hand it makes taxpayers pick up the cost by paying higher salaries

After the massive wage increases in public sector wages over the Brown years ( my wife had hers trebled ) it is reasonable to have them cut in real terms, the graph will reflect their 'sacrifices'.

Anyways, we could be paying everyone in the UK £200 an hour and still have a substantial numbers in poverty as it is classified as anyone earning under 60% of the median UK wage.

It's a joke of a metric, I'm sure families are hard up, struggle with budgeting and don't get to buy everything they want but to claim 6.5 million are in poverty in the country is complete balderdash.

The basic argument is whether the government should be topping up the wages of low paid workers so that companies don't have to and can make larger profits.

Surely the only fair way to fund higher benefits for low paid workers is via higher corporation tax. I'm sure everyone here would be happy with that.

Imagine a country where housing and rents were cheap, and everybody's wage packet went further!

              I love that idea!

Think how many more BTL properties I could have with cheap housing and bigger wages!

This just underlines the needy sense of entitlement that permeates the thinking of the Facebook generation. Anybody that imagines there are any guarantees to be had in life are always going to be in for disappointment when the harsh realities kick in and they find out that you will only get out what you put in. Irrespective of how much bleating you may do. Just MTFU and stop your whining.
