Why wait for war to reach your shores when you can keep it far away?

Why not just pretend we are renewing Trident but in reality spend the money on housing and infrastructure projects? None of our enemies would ever be completely sure we didn't have them, so we would get the benefit of a deterrent for free.

Because 90% of the cost is putting the subs out to sea for 40 years, which you would still have to do for a fake deterrent anyway.

The actual nukes and missiles themselves are a small part of the cost.

The only point of the deterrent is to make sure we are not on the receiving end of a similar decision.
If the japs had the bomb, and a means of delivering it, the yanks would never had dropped it on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Unless the japs were stupid enough to announce to the world that despite having nukes, they would NEVER use them.

Maybe that's what's already happening WITH Trident

What was that SciFi short story about the war on the moon which was 'won' by the Brits with about 3 missiles which they never fired, because the big players took each other out? I think it was Clarke or Asimov.
