No idea, probably the same reason you maintain something by doing manitenance.
I'm not even an atheist so much as I am an antitheist; I not only maintain that all religions are versions of the same untruth, but I hold that the influence of churches, and the effect of religious belief, is positively harmful. [Christopher Hitchens]

Why are there two "o"s in Google, if no-one can type it in to their browser...

Isn't Fridge a bit like Hoover - a brand name that has become synonymous with the product?

How would you pronounce "Frige"? You'd probably try to say it like "Freeg".

It's probably a case of people writing it down based on how it sounds and that spelling becoming the norm.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Nope, "fridge" was never a brand name. There was a brand called "Frigidaire", and "fridge" is believed to be an abbreviation thereof, but it's no more a brand name than "hoo" would be.

An alternative spelling I've seen in books published around the 1920s and 1930s is "frig", but that seems to have been quite short-lived, for obvious reasons
