I understand £750 is not a lot for private renting. But when you work part time, less than 16 hours I find it hard to understand how its possible to afford that rent. Have 2 cars etc.

    It's a 3 bedroom.

Housing benefit for a 3 bedroom in Manchester is between £577.72 and £657.71 a month, child benefit for 6 kids will be £386 a month, I would imagine at least one child will be classed as disabled (not a dig but odds are 1/6 will have something which will allow them to claim DLA which will be a minimum of £94 a month. Working 16 hours a week is a magic number as working tax credits will bump this up a minimum of £164 a month, minimum wage for 16 hours a week will mean a take home pay of £464 a month.

Add this all up to around £1685, or the equivalent salary of £24500 a year

So £1000 a month after housing costs, budget right and that can go a long way

Housing Benefit can still be paid on a property rented from a close family member. They will take more convincing it is a genuine commercial arrangement but it is still possible.

You learn something every day! I always thought it was never possible.

The question is whether it is contrived on not. If the tenancy only exists to secure an HB claim then (in theory) forget it, if not contrived then it is OK. A popular fraud was/is "you rent mine, I'll rent yours".

This is in fact the general rule and doesn't have to be family member. It is just much more likely with family members.

              - Eviction on non payment of rent (in accordance with legal aspects of course)
              - Would it otherwise be let on the open market
              - Would the let still happen if it were not for housing benefit

There is one weird one which catches a few people though (unfairly I think). It appears that you are barred from claiming housing benefit renting from an ex for a home that was previously shared. I'm not sure how far this goes but a friend found themselves in this situation after splitting up and HB was denied; though when they moved across the road it was then granted.

Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

Thanks for the links, I'm pretty amazed that benefits are so high.
