    This depends on the role.

    My last few permie positions were lead or development manager and I've been in a short term role as a development manager while contracting. I've found that it can polarise opinion as often a purely technical contractor is required and agencies/clients don't like the fact that you may be expecting a more management based role no matter how much you say that isn't the case.

    Customising the CV is key here...

        Livenation have a VP of Talent. Now that's a job title.

        Senior is ambiguous in IT - it can mean oldest, been there longest, best, best ass-kisser or given the title because they couldn't bring the person in on the wage structure and just call them Developer.

        That said, have you (OP) considered climbing the management ladder instead? Stick at perm for another five years, see where it takes you and you'll be able to command a higher contracting fee too.
