Offering guarantee to EU citizens is not breaching in any way the process of exiting EU, in fact such gesture of good will would be appreciated and create friendly negotiation atmosphere, common sense really.

AFAIK, it's 5 years of living in UK that allows EU citizens to get permanent rights to settle, so as soon as Article 50 is invoked it would mean that everybody who wants to stay will apply - vast majority of them (90%) would qualify for staying anyway, so why piss them off???

Quite. I think also we should let all ex pat Nationals wait for the discretion of the EU.

EU will certainly reciprocate, under legislation of most countries where ex-pats live they will qualify for permanent residency just like it happens in UK.

And if that does not happen then those ex-pats should not have gone to live in a tulip country that does not give a tulip about law abiding people moving there.

I agree. So why won't the EU reciprocate? As you say, it's not breaching process.

Or is it because they don't give two hoots about their clones as it's more important to keep the empire intact?

They can't reciprocate NOW because UK has not filed Article 50 to leave, so it's totally unnecessary to do it now.

Only UK Govt knows for sure if they are bluffing or not, EU doesn't and they have to deal with facts, but if UK Govt makes a gesture of good will and stops using EU nationals as hostages, then EU would certainly be forced to reciprocate as part of exit negotiations.

Using human shield, hostages is a terrorist tactic - it should not be used by UK.

The EU should send all brits home and see if the UK has the ba**s to do the same. The EU would win this one.

I don't think they'll be able to do that, certainly not for vast majority of Brits who moved many years ago and will have qualified for permanent residency, remember that EU Court will still work in UK, it's the EU citizens in UK who might end up without recourse to it.

EU citizens in the UK have right to residency after 5 years. Shorter term residents from the UK can can be thrown out. Many Romanians, Bulgarians have been in the Uk for less than 3 years so would not qualify. Britain would not have the moral entitlement or balls to throw them out. It is a game of hard line that the EU should play.

Yeah only 1 problem with that - it is a main source of income for some countries

so the EU may say send all the ex pats back to the UK

and Spain would definitely say fook off.

As others have said there is nothing wrong with agreeing in principal what the decision would be and then once a50 is triggered it becomes legit

this idea that no one can talk about it is just a 50 year old tradition of old bitter men who want to make themselves look important with little interest in the impacts of their actions.

EU is a much bigger economy than the UK so it could weather the problem
