being a champagne socialist I am happy to pay more for goods and services if the workers involved are in my country, therefore, keeping money sloshing around in the local economy rather than just sending every penny abroad

the problem is those who just want the cheapest without considering the consequences of their selfishness

    Milan.

Difficult to do with most things here.
Having foreign owned transport is one of the biggest shams we have.

I do wear British made shoes and knitwear though.

But what about those that opt to buy the cheapest because they are skint?

the cheap goods are the root of the problem and should be removed from the market

Isolationism works both ways. If you're going to tax imports, other countries are going to tax your exports. You want to make sure that for every additional car you make for a domestic market, you lose less than 1 sale abroad. Of course no one outside the US buys american cars because corners

If isolationism and protectionism is sooooo bad, it can't be any worse than our openism which we've had for the last 40 years ?

we all know how successful openism has been

let's give isolationism and protectionism a try we might be surprised

                Milan.

When George W Bush became president, he slapped on tariffs to protect. the steel industry. This measure protected 5000 jobs. The trouble was this made steel very expensive for the manufacturers who couldn't compete to export so they had plans to lay off 50,000 workers.

After a year George Bush gave up. That was to stop 50,000 workers being laid off

Protectionism is like a bubble in the carpet you can stamp on the bubble but it will simply appear somewhere else. Trump is going to find this out.

                  I'm alright Jack
