My contributions go way beyond the merely economic. I am a cultural enigma me!!

Would it not be worth looking at getting the PCB repaired by a specialist? Most of the time it'll be a capacitor or 2 that'll need replacing rather than any of the chips. A friend repairs my heater control PCB every few years, they stopped making parts for it years ago.

Not a bad idea. Much of the time it's electrolytic capacitors that fail first.

Fair point. electrolytics don't like heat, they'll dry out and stop being capacitors.
Won't necessarily show signs of failure, unlike when ...err... someone... plugs them in the wrong way round

I ran out of time. It will be a project for when I get back home in Feb, but I have found my old soldering iron (that rests in a Mecano cradle.)

Is that what Mrs Fox Hat is left to heat her beans up with until February?

She's got the Rayburn and a full tank of oil. Last time I was talking to her about beans she mentioned flicking.
