He may actually be an alcoholic so even though he's stinks of alcohol he actually functions fine.

Which law/regulation says you cannot be drunk at an interview?

I know where that is. My ex's dad used to work there.

If he was determined to be too drunk to drive a vehicle and banned, how is he fit for managing people/assets/whatever?

None that i'm aware of. But most employment contracts prohibit you from being drunk on the job. Why bother doing the interview in the first place if the chance of having to sack him for being drunk afterwards are high.

You've clearly (and luckily) lead a sheltered life.

What if it turned out he wasn't over the limit and had simply got a condition that over-accentuated alcohol on his breath but was, other than that, the outstanding candidate?

Rare, but there was the case a couple of years ago of the woman who could get drunk off potatoes - a one portion of chips girl. If it had turned out to be a disability, they'd have been absolutely roasted in the press for it. That's why they're in the police force and unfortunately it's also another example of how hamstrung the police are by procedures today thanks to a few bad apples of yesteryear.

Even medical staff have been caught out for presuming people are drunk when in fact they have another medical condition.

Indeed, I'm talking more about the (excuse the pun) PC processes in place these days that mean they probably cannot breathalyse him at the start or terminate the interview early. Still, he's within staggering distance of Lidl one way or the Friendship pub the other way, so he'd be fine.

As long as it wasn't a morning interview. The old man's waiting outside the Friendship already and it doesn't open until 12.

Not a bad choice. Good pub as they go for Joseph Holts establishments. Better than joining the Special Brew crew in the village.
