    Yep, as MP for Maidenhead...British Prime Ministers have never been elected directly by the public. A Prime Minister need not be a party leader, David Lloyd-George wasn't. The monarch of the time appoints the Prime Minister who just happens to be the candidate put forward and can in fact be turned down...

      I suspect that PM is now the pinnacle of any career politician in this country (another benefit of leaving the EU is that you don't have a series of PM chunts who then seek higher office in Brussels) and if you get that far you're allowed to start thinking about the country as a whole and no longer about you constituents per se. You will also have the 'might' of the civil service behind you to 'advise'.

        Unless you're Nigel Farage who can never be PM now having failed 7 times to be elected as an MP. Talk about a failure
