Full remote working - Perm or contract

Hello all,

I have a hankering to relocate somewhere like the tip of Cornwall, or some such stunning rural location. Problem of course, is the work front. I see that remote working is really starting to take of in IT finally.

Anyone any experience of remote working? Pay could be fairly low, but I'm able to take a big cut having no need for a mortgage or rent and having simple needs in life, like a beach, a nice pub nearby and such like.

2 contracts ago, the perm dev manager relocated down towards that area, he dropped two pay grade but worked for the same employer. Now and again he turned up at the office in the midlands. Worked out OK as people moved up and he relocated to where he wanted.

I've been looking for the same.

I've seen a few perm dev roles on jobserve paying in the region of 40-50 k pa. Way, way below what you'd earn as a contractor obviously but there's a part of me that would take that just not to have to do a monstrous commute and to get away from office crap.

Exactly this. No commute costs and no loss of time sitting in traffic queues week in and week out. I think £50k would cut it. Do you think it's possible to survive on £50K pa with no housing costs? Or would I be eating out of bins on that sort of pay?

I could live very comfortably off that. My needs are fairly simple.

Just got an email from a pimp. Dev required for Bournemouth, with 2 days remote working.£30k to £45k + benefits.

2 days remote working is no use for me. I'm talking about 100% remote save for maybe face to face meetings of a day or two every month. I'd be able to meet virtually using online video link everyday of course.

The key thing the answer to that depends on is how many dependents you have.

Unless you are pretty niche and specialist it will be unlikely you could dictate terms that specifically.

At the end of the day if you are a new contractor most companies are unlikely to spend 400+ per day for some guy to sit in his pants at home 'working'

I have found you build it up over time when trust is formed due to continued delivery.
