Brexit will make Londoners and their city poorer

I suggest we set up a just giving page sofort.

Londoners today gave a huge thumbs down to Brexit, saying it will make them and the capital poorer.

By overwhelming margins, they believe London and Britain will lose influence, haemorrhage jobs and see damage to the National Health Service.

The verdict is revealed in a new research project launched today by Queen Mary University of London to analyse political trends in the capital city.

Data from the first in a series of YouGov studies found Londoners markedly more pessimistic about leaving the EU than people in other regions.

Nearly half of Londoners (46 per cent) think the Government is handing negotiations badly, while just 24 per cent think it is doing well. Among young Londoners the divide expands to 56 to 13.

By three-to-one (45 - 15) they think London will be economically worse off. Almost half, 48 per cent, think Britain will be worse off.

Only 16 per cent think leaving will be good for jobs in London. But 43 per cent say it will be bad for jobs.

Just 11 per cent say they will be personally better off after Brexit, while 36 per cent fear they will lose out. Some 35 per cent think it will make no difference to them.

Nearly four in 10 think Brexit will make no difference at all to the levels of immigration. Some 37 per cent think the NHS will suffer.

A clear majority of 53 per cent think it was wrong to vote to leave the EU. Excluding “don’t knows”, this is exactly in line with the 60/40 split in London in the June referendum, when nearly 2.3 million backed Remain and 1.5 million backed Leave.

Prof Philip Cowley, director of the university’s Mile End Institute, said the Polling London project aimed to tackle a relative shortage of academic research into London public opinion compared with Scotland and Wales.

“Despite a population in excess of both Scotland and Wales combined, it’s rare to see London being polled on a regular basis,” he said. “Conventional polls just lump London in with the rest of England, but we know it behaves very differently.”

Sadiq Khan is "heart-broken" that the UK chose Brexit

Londoners had “no Bregrets” about the way they voted last June, he said. “Of those who voted to Leave, 85 per cent think the decision was right. There’s little evidence of people changing their minds.”

37% think the NHS will suffer?

Most managers will blame their failings on Brexit, no question about it.

Brexit will replace "Credit crunch" or simply "this economy" as the catch-all for things going badly.

Yep. Londoners seem reluctant to admit when they get things wrong.

The irony is it's only Brexit that's distracting the population from the NHS failing.

              Poor London=Poor UK.
London generates 25-30% of UK GDP. Without it the Uk is little better than Portugal.

What's the Standard got to do with it?

Or "Mile End Polytechnic" as it should be known.
