How the F does it become the passenger's problem that the airline is too incompetent to ensure correct numbers of people on board their own planes?

The more one reads on this, the more stupid and incompetent United appear.
    From the Fail:
Louisville is a four-and-a-half hour, 300 mile drive from Chicago.
So they didn't even had to charter a plane, just make their employees take a cab or a rental and pay them overtime for the effort.

Far better to get an elderly passenger beaten up, get a police man suspended for doing the beatings, and to look like a company with managers who can't arrange a piss up in a brewery. After all, all publicity is good publicity.....

Looks like United Airlines CEO still has plenty of spade work to complete on the hole

The chief executive of United Airlines has described the passenger who was forcibly removed from an overbooked plane as “disruptive and belligerent”, and told the airline’s employees that they “followed established procedures”.

Indeed. I suspect he, without thinking too deeply about it, adopted his normal "Tell them to fukk off" attitude, and went out to play golf. Very enjoyable stuff.

Now he seems to have changed tack, I wonder why

Nearly $1bn of the company’s value was erased in trading on Tuesday. Later that day, Munoz said he was committed to “fix what’s broken so this never happens again”. He pledged to review the company’s policies for seeking volunteers to give up their seats, for handling oversold flights and for partnering with airport authorities and local law enforcement.

I wonder if he'd done the same had the story not gone viral across the internet and late-night talk shows. What's the betting UA will ban camera phones in the cabin (on security grounds, natch) in case they "don't fix what's broken so this never happens again" ?
His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...
