        I did a research degree at the Open University. Working as an academic isn't work, and you get to travel to all the conferences, which are also "not work". Decided not to pursue it because the money isn't great, but I wonder, money isn't everything.

            But you might find that there is a plan-B style IT project you could work on in your own time, that might generate some cash, and because you are doing it for yourself the work does not feel onerous.

            At the moment I'm out of contract, and am spending time writing an automated stock market trading program. Risky yes, but with safeguards it might make me some pin money.
