Should the EU be making progressive scientific constructions like this?

Or should we be rejecting collaboration and supporting isolation?

Visited this project a couple of year ago. Construction in Marseille (That's in France ), wow. The scale of this project is immense.

Speaking of collaboration, after Brexit, will the UK get access to the shinny new Galileo GPS system?

As of 2016, the total price of constructing the experiment is expected to be in excess of €20 billion,[55] an increase of €4.6 billion of its 2010 estimate,[56] and of €9.6 billion from the 2009 estimate.[57] Prior to that, the proposed costs for ITER were €5 billion for the construction and €5 billion for maintenance and the research connected with it during its 35-year lifetime
its a lorra lorra money for an experiment! Will the EU pickup the shortfall post Brexit or the other partners?

Seem to recall another country had some success without using a tokamak design
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

so its open to anyone then?

            https://www.iter.org/proj/inafewlines#5

The ITER Members China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United States have combined resources to conquer one of the greatest frontiers in science—reproducing on Earth the boundless energy that fuels the Sun and the stars.
so apart from us being another signatory rather than part of the EU nothing will change then?

We should be supporting voluntary collaboration, on a case by case basis.

the clever thing is, the location, imagine if that was located in the UK, all that investment, all those jobs, have a look on their web page, the "Project" has a 20 years timeline just to get to the point where they switch on the machine !!

after Brexit there'll be no chance of Britain hosting projects like that.

Shame, but, hey, exporting to the commonwealth and former Empire countries will more than make up for silly projects like that

Hang on! for the cost of that project, how many houses could be:

                  a) Provided solar panels like the Tesla roof?
                  b) Be rebuilt entirely to a passive model that uses ground heat
                  c) Mix of the above

Yes its a great experiment to do but bang for buck the money should be else where

                    Bob,

you have a point, but the difference between using the money to build houses and using the money to experiment with the goal of finding this new form of cheap electricity is....

Building a house just houses that family

Do the experimental project for 50 years will employee the father who feeds the family and buys the house

Therefore the investment in the Experimental Thingy is better for the economy
