    Todays possible darwin award

Sint Maarten jet engine blast kills New Zealand woman - BBC News

I was at that beach in January. Its enough when an exec jet is goung up or down.

The bar has a blackboard outside giving arrival and departure times of large airports. That is a good time to be in the bar which is still only 50m from the threshold.

There has been a YouTube vid being doing the rounds for years of a woman holding on the fence and being blown backwards landing head first on the second of two foot high concrete kerbs. Sounds like exactly the same thing.

    Here it is

The particular stretch of beach on the Dutch territory is popular with tourists, partly because the planes fly extremely low over the sand before landing.
The beginning of the runway is just 50m (160ft) from the fence on Maho beach, and about the same distance to the waterline.
There are prominent warning signs in the area instructing beachgoers not to stand near the fence because of the dangerous air blasts.
Why don't they just move the fence further away so you can't get as close in the first place?

It looks like the road is in the way, and the beach behind it, and anyway standing close behind a revving jumbo jet is obviously a pleasant pastime for many and it seems unsporting to try and spoil their fun.

They could build out the sides of the concrete kerbs to have a very shallow slope on the landward side for a short stretch behind the runway, so their cross section is like a slice of cheese on its side, and cover it with some kind of soft fluffy mesh.

If people are doing this frequently, at least having someone to enforce the sign would make sense.

Stop fussing and nannying. If people want to have fun, and take selfies of themselves flying through the air then let them!

(edit: As long as they pay for the hearing aids they'll probably need later)

As d0000000000000gh said. You can say it's stupid to ignore the signs but it seems pretty daft to have aircraft so close to a public area.
