I think if I was looking to join a club, it'd be for a real gun - or for archery - one of the benefits of an air gun is you can use it at home IMO.

The site I looked at first was definitely into both spring and compressed gas versions still... guess the big minus of the former is you can't get set for multiple shots. I would say it also means you only get one chance if hunting or shooting pests, but realistically if you miss the beastie is gone anyway (we had a half-thought of eating some of the many wood-pigeons in our trees).

I'll see if there's a good shop round here; I've got out of the habit of going to shops with knowledgeable staff.

Archery can be great fun at home if you have the room.

I did archery at school and liked it, but I'm not sure I'd want the faff of all the kit at home - and an arrow is far more potentially dangerous than a pellet. Plus the arrows are expensive and non-disposable!

I'm pretty sure that doing some of the things I did with air rifles and air pistols when a great deal younger would lead to the plod circling in their helicopter & the arrival of an armed response unit.

            But there you go.

Apparently as long as the pellets stay within the confines of my garden I'm ok.

Not sure I'm prepared to test that, mind you.
A little drop of Diesel with a syringe on the end of the pellet helps...

We had all the kit, target, bows and arrows, basically.

If you are arming at a target, I don't see why it would be more dangerous.

As for your second point you never recover your lead pellets, great for the wild life, arrows can be used 100's of times, fitting new tips or flights as needed.

Hammerli 550 .22 spring powered (it is just under the max power allowed in an air rifle)
They are cheap as chips and if it's only for the odd squirrel/pigeon, will do as good a job as one 3x the price.

You can even get them with a scope and silencer for £200...

...although I'd sooner go to Uttings and get a decent scope.

Pigeons and squirrels are pissing me off so been looking at pellpax.co.uk quite a bit recently. Shot loads when I was a kid as lived on a farm. Was out with a shotgun at 15. Why I shacked up with a veggie is beyond me now as she is not keen on me having a gun in the house. Lockable box hidden somewhere is my plan. Now she is back teaching again I can do a Michael Heseltine. For garden use all I am looking at it the traditional break barrel, .22 - 200 notes should have me ready to try and bring the woodys and greys to a more sensible level (i.e. complete annihilation).
