EU states could refuse to approve a trade deal with the UK

Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, has said EU states could refuse to approve a trade deal with the UK unless the government gives assurances that it will not use Brexit to deregulate and lower standards. He made the comment in meeting with peers last week, the transcript of which has just been published. (See 5.17pm.)

Obviously necessary position - nobody in EU can allow free trade black hole with state that would lower overall standards

Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

            1) We have already stated that we plan to copy & paste EU regulation into UK law via the Great Repeal Bill. So it stands that there will be no lowering of standards

            2) The UK has a history of implementing EU regulation and then adding bells and whistles to it. Other EU countries are well known for not actually implementing it. UK standards already exceed the minimum EU standards in many areas.

Example one - the proposed regulations around banning credit card surcharges for VISA and Mastercard transactions. The UK has added American Express transactions into that mix.

Example two - The EU mandates 14 weeks maternity leave entitlement, the UK mandates 52 weeks.

            3) It is quite reasonable for such a trade deal to specify that UK goods meet EU standards. They should include that clause in its CETA and other trade deals. Maybe the same deal should also specify that we wont accept shonky goods from the EU which don't meet UK standards.

                    They can, obviously.

But a better question is, why on earth would they? That is in nobody's best interests, and when it all comes down to it, it is "mutual best interests" that will decide all of this.
