Can one upload mp3 files or ape files to an iPod Touch?

Thinking of joining the dark side and buying something beginning with "i" to stream music

So as the iPod Nano is being discontinued, the choice (if going with Apple) is a 128 GB iPod Touch :

2017-07-27 Apple discontinues iPod nano and shuffle and doubles iPod touch capacities to 32GB and 128GB

However, I'm not spending a fortune on something that locks one exclusively into an online music store. So I'm wondering if one can download music files, e.g. mp3 or ape files, from a connected Windows PC to the thing. (I already have a vast collection of these, snaffled off usenet audio groups over the years.)

Maybe this belongs more in technical, but anyway ...

IIRC this is an iTunes question, and you can certainly transfer music from CD's to iTunes, and thence to an iPod. See if you can get the files into iTunes.

If they are in MP3 etc format, then yes, you import them into iTunes on your PC and then transfer them that way.
I've never purchased any music via iTunes, but have plenty of stuff transferred that way.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

The only way is to get the files in iTunes, once there, they can be synced with the device.

There is no way to just upload files to apple device. This has been my only gripe with the iPhone, which is no longer a big deal after I started to listen to mostly streamed music.
