    Default Bang - It continues..

    linky

Hundreds of people have been told they will have to leave their homes on an estate of tower blocks in London after safety checks carried out following the Grenfell Tower fire found the buildings had been at risk of collapse for decades.

In a development with potentially major implications for blocks elsewhere, residents of the Ledbury estate said they were shocked and alarmed to learn that the four 13-storey blocks were at risk of collapse in the event of a gas explosion in one of the flats.
The Ledbury blocks were constructed between 1968 and 1970 using a method called large panel system, in which giant concrete sections were bolted together on site. The same technique was used at Ronan Point, a tower block in east London which partly collapsed in 1968 following a gas explosion. Four people died and 17 were injured when a blast from a gas stove in an 18th-storey flat caused a series of floors to collapse on to each other, one of the most notorious public disasters of the era.

I wonder how safe the new tower blocks they are building are with the new materials they are using?

It feels like an elaborate scheme to get rid of the undesirable council estates that are driving prices down in otherwise gentile areas.

Just listening to residents on the radio.

Apparently the cracks have been there for over 15 years and people have complained continuously. The cracks are so big they can see into each others flats.

Didn't something like that happen in London a few years ago?

A gas explosion on one floor, and right up that side of the building every floor above it collapsed like a pack of cards?

The council's letter said they would have to 'decant' the building. If it's not safe, they shouldn't have housed all the cants there in the first place, i'd suggest.

Edit - on re-reading that, I think it's been done on purpose. Nobody would use the word 'decant' accidentally in this circumstance. I imagine a wager was involved somewhere.

Why can't they just turn the gas off and give everyone free food vouchers while they rewire the flats for leccy cookers then?
