Pay the £600, get a written receipt and be done with it. The worst is it's £300 over the odds. Any subsequent grief will be more than £300's worth.

They have a right to go to a dealer which the insurance company would accept.

I would fork out or let it run through the insurance. Since your wife has admitted she did it, it will be her insurance that pays and the other party won't have their no claims affected.

If someone damaged my car I would take it to the official dealer to ensure I got it done to the highest professional standard.

Can people insist on Main Dealer repairs? I wouldn't have thought so. If it goes via Insurance it's the insurance company that chooses.

@SueEllen that's a very good point I hadn't thought of that. When he was having a look at it he was saying he wanted both doors spraying, I bet there's another scratch on the other door and he wants us to pay for both.
I kinda don't get this attitude. You've damaged someone else's car. The owner has gotten a quote from a main dealer as millions of people do and you arguing the toss. I certainly wouldn't want some small outfit I don't know doing it so they've picked main dealer to be the safe side. Its totally reasonable and bearing in mind it's your **** up you should just pay up. It's not just about the money. It's the time and grief you've caused.

And now you are accusing the other party of trying to rip you off??

Pay the ******* money, apologise and get on with life.

So will any accidental damage that may or may not occur at some given point in the future. Shopping trolleys etc.

He's basically saying "I want you to pay Honda through the nose for the repairs." we're saying "we want to pay this authorised body repair shop, with an 18 month guarantee, money back guarantee if you don't like it, with 45 years experience, half the price of what Honda charga, and do as good as if not a better job".

    1. Yes they can.

    2. Not necessarily.

Unfortunately some people believe how ever old their car is it has some value.

5 year old small cars aren't worth much but as you have to live next door to them and it maybe for the next 10, 20, etc years just give them the money. This fact over rules everything else.

One of my siblings gave his neighbour just under £1K for a window so he could have his extension built. While it was a rip off 10 years later all parties are still civil to one another.

The neighbour is being unreasonable. They should be grateful someone owned up.

I would always push for the main dealer to repair. I've got no idea if the body repair shop will go under or not within the 18 months.

It's 600 pound, couple of days work for the average contractor.

If the neighbour is unreasonable about this think how they could make your life hell for the next 5, 10, 15, 20 etc years.

Just to put some further details, there's no time or grief.

    1) The guy is retired, he just sits staring out of his window all day, he doens't commute anywhere or do anything exciting with it. It just sits on the road all day.
    2) It's a scratch, we've not written off his car or made it undrivable.
    3) The company who quoted the 300-350 said it's a two day job, they collect and return it and courtesy car in the meantime.
    4) It's not some back street garage with alsations kept in cages on site and big steel gates. It's a small body repair shop with 45 years experience and all work fully guaranteed, and even a money back guarantee if he doesn't like the job.

PS any talk about "The paint has to come from Honda to guarantee it matches" it absoulte tulip, as we confirmed this with both repair shops.

Looks like you have three options, pay the money (no they are not being unreasonable as it is there right to choose any garage and a main dealer is not a super car specialist body shop charging 4 times a main dealer. The main dealer will probably give them a curtorsy car as well while theirs is off the road will the back street body shop?), give them your insurance details or tell them to sue you in court.
