The health concerns are only really a worry if you're going to spend all day every day in one. For the few seconds you're in there you're not going to be exposed to anything that will cause any issue. You get more radiation exposure from the flight itself, about 100 times more, and it lasts a good 75% of the flight, not a few seconds.
Are airport body scanners a radiation risk? - BBC News There's probably a real science paper on it somewhere but not sure this audience will cope with the large words.

The full body scanner may become compulsory but at the moment it isn't. They have SLAs with the airlines and regulatory targets to hit regarding queue times through the gates and at this time of year are processing ~2500 passengers/hour 24/7 on average through each terminal.
People don't want to go through the full body scanner but will then complain if they have to queue for too long and don't get long enough in the IDL or end up having to run for their plane...
