      It isn't.

It causes violence including injury and death in the betting shops who are staffed by one person.

Ah, that's why I mentioned that a few "one off" bets (not subject to the deposit) would be allowed, precisely so casual "Grand National" betters would not be excluded.

But I agree my proposal probably wouldn't really be very effective.

Relieving fools of their money quicker, so it's back in circulation and perhaps put to more productive use?

FOBTs on every down-at-heel high street has a much worse impact, I would guess.

You lack the intellectual capacity to pull off a sneering metropolitan élite pose.

My dad used to tell me: you'll never see a rich gambler. And mostly we all know that's true.

But the government won't ban or discourage gambling, for the same reason it doesn't ban smoking altogether. If anyone believes the government gives a sh1t about broken homes or crime or anything bad linked to gambling, then I'm sorry to say they are mistaken. The only thing the government cares about is tax receipts.

It isn't. I gamble when stressed and to be honest have had a gambling problem since I was 15 growing up around arcades in a sea side resort.

I had to self exclude myself from some online sites recently as after a bottle of wine I was making some horrendous bets / losses. I recently did a quick mental calculation and I've probably lost 250-300k minimum over the last 25 years.

                    Quite probably.

I bet you it's more than that.
