    MIG, TIG or ARC. Welding mask or goggles?

      Goggles are for oxy-acetylene unless you want an instant suntan and semiblindness.

            For Arc welding you require a very dark mask otherwise you'll have "sand in your eyes".

              Exactly how it was described to me by someone daft enough to have a go without eye protection. Actually, he said it's like having sand in your eyes constantly for three days.

                And the protection for MIG and TIG is even darker than for manual arc welding since there's no flux to reduce the incredible glare.

                It will give you sun burn.

                  I have seen auto darkening welding helmets. It saves accidentally poking the cat's bum hole with a welding rod.

                    Got one (from Lidl) though I haven't got around to trying it out yet.

                    It's got a photocell so doesn't need batteries or anything, generates the darkening voltage from the light of the arc.

                    So it's green too.
