Bonn break....

Thinking of taking advantage of a Manchester to Cologne cheap deal next weekend - Cologne has a carnival.

As such, there are no hotels available but I have found a nice looking guest house south of Bonn in a region called Bad Honnef. Hire a Polo for £20, transport sorted.

Does anyone know the region - where is good to explore? I arrive late morning, return flight early the following morning.

Not sure whether to bother with Cologne itself and just explore the locality around Bonn. Hotel has a restaurant so sorted for evening meal.

Just go to Koblenz along the Rhine, the Rhine gorge beyond Koblenz is worth a trip as is the Mosel. Plenty of castles to keep you amused.

There is nothing else around Bonn apart from Cologne.

It is about an hours drive.

Karneval doesn't start until 11/11 at 11:11 and Köln will be one big party town that day. Bonn itself can be quite boring but the Altstadt is not too bad with some good bars and places to eat. If you want to go into Bonn, then you could go to the Haribo factory shop in Bad Godesberg and stock up on sweets. Next to Bad Honnef is Königswinter which has some great places to drink wine and eat but there is also a very large SeaLife center but there is also Drachenfels which is quite picturesque and get the cable car up to it. You might also be able to still get a boat trip up the Rhein to Köln from Königswinter too

It's the traditonal start of the Carnival season in the rest of the world, all local Carnival committees elect their new Prince who will reign until the season finishes when Lent starts

BTW 11:11 in real Europe is 10:11 in the UK
