Monday Links from the Bench vol. CDXIII

Spent your lunch money on Cyber Monday deals? You'll have to stay at your desk and read this lot instead
    • How the sandwich consumed Britain - "The world-beating British sandwich industry is worth £8bn a year. It transformed the way we eat lunch, then did the same for breakfast – and now it’s coming for dinner." A fascinating deep dive into the thing that’s dripping mayonnaise on your keyboard as you read it

    • Run the First Edition of Unix (1972) with Docker - "In this article you'll see how to run a PDP-11 simulator through Docker to interact with Unix as it was back in 1972." It’s worth reading the comments if you’ve forgotten, or never knew, how to do the functional equivalent of “backspace” on a Teletype.

    • How to Tell If You’re a Jerk - "There are, presumably, genuine jerks in the world. And many of those jerks, presumably, have a pretty high moral opinion of themselves, or at least a moderate opinion of themselves. They don’t think of themselves as jerks, because jerk self-knowledge is hard to come by." Eric Schwitzgebel considers how you might determine whether you’re not actually that nice a person.

    • The Codex Quetzalecatzin comes to the Library of Congress - "The Codex Quetzalecatzin, also known as the Mapa de Ecatepec-Huitziltepec, the Codex Ehecatepec and Huitziltepec, or the Charles Ratton Codex, is an extremely rare colored Mesoamerican manuscript and one of the most important indigenous manuscripts from the earliest history of the Americas to become available in recent years. Several months ago the Library Congress acquired this world treasure from a private collector in France, and has now made it available to the public digitally, allowing it to be seen and studied by scholars across the world, for the first time in more than a century."

    • Linux comics: a small zine - A useful comic by Julia Evans: ”Last November, I drew a bunch of comics about Linux / computers / various systemsy things. One every day, about 30 of them… This morning I woke up and thought, ‘well, what would happen if I just formatted all those comics from last year into a small zine that folks could print?’”

    • Television's Most Infamous Hack Is Still a Mystery 30 Years Later - "On November 22, 1987, someone hacked two local news broadcasts in Chicago to show Max Headroom. The hacker's motive and identity has never been discovered." Caroline Haskins talks to Dan Roan and Chuck Swirsky, the broadcasters who were rudely interrupted by the infamous prank.

    • A Flat Earther's Steamy Attempt at Proof - "Modern day flat earthers are determined to prove us spherical earthers wrong. They cling to every hint they can find that supports their idea, no matter how dubiously… they're evolving into ever stranger forms. One of the latest? Forests. Specifically: they deny that any such thing as a forest exists.”

    • 1891: Chandler finds a wobble - Nobody told this chap the earth was flat. What a rube! ”Sometimes, in science, it turns out that the best way to find something is to not be looking for it at all. This is more or less what happened in 1891, when an amateur astronomer and full-time insurance actuary observed and correctly interpreted a small anomalous motion of the Earth that other astronomers had been looking for decades, a motion now known at the Chandler wobble.”

    • Celebrity Perv Apology Generator - Handy tool to generate apologies for the showbiz community: ”As someone who grew up in a different era, I feel tremendously guilty now that the things I did have been made public… In conclusion, I will not change anything about my actions or behavior.”

    • Traveling Illustrator Captures London’s Historic Pubs as Cut-Out Pen and Ink Drawings - ”As [Australian illustrator Maxwell Tilse] prepares to leave London after living there for two years, he has released a new series of cut-out drawings that depict the city’s oldest pubs."

    Happy invoicing!

Love the subtle nuance between a jerk and an asshole.

Reading though, I suspect that there is a difference between assholes and arseholes as well...
