Been watching season 1 on Netflix over the past few days.
OK I got used to the new Star Trek universe
The series and special effects are great
First time both the F and S words are being uttered in the Star Trek franchise as far as I know
First gay couple living together in a cabin on the star ship

All fine with me
But so far there was always a hint of real science around the Start Trek warp technology (as well as a lot of total fantasy, but the effort was there) and that has gone with the spore drive in my opinion

the spore drive has gone completely now IMO.
They just need to find a way to write it out of history. Maybe cos it's dangerous and becomes outlawed and confidential.
The mycellium spreading across the universe and violating causality could lead to interesting stories.

In general though, the warp drive stuff and anything that violates the aforementioned causality is always going to be a problem when compared with real science.

I enjoy Star Trek but discovery has annoyed me rather then be fun to watch. Especially when you compare it to the expanse, a much better show, better plots, acting and special effects

Data says 'Oh shiiit!' in ST:Generations when the Enterprise D saucer section fails out of Warp near Veridian 3 after the warp core breach of the separated Primary Hull.

Pretty poor if they are going against canon and introducing 'F' words but that seems to be the way with HBO and Netflix.

Yes the spore drive is a bit meh - although it's an interesting twist.

I think the setting seems darker and more 'edgy' which is ok really.

Obviously to keep things up to data from a gender perspective the lead character is a female ( I think) with a male name and there is 'the gay couple' - at the time of watching this I was also rewatching TNG so did a very rough comparison from a 'relationship/sexualisation' perspective.

And generally there is no more emphasis on the TNG 'romance' threads - which generally were pretty heterosexual and the Discovery 'romance' threads - which was good as it means the characters in Discovery fit in well without the series trying to shout out about being inclusive and right on because the have a gay couple and maybe a transgender person.

Kate Mulgrew aka Kathryn Janeway was the first female lead. Rachel Garratt was the first acknowledge Star Fleet Captain (Yesterday's Enterprise) and, TNG especially did several episode exploring homosexuality and gender persecution of species.

There was also a lesbian kiss in DS9 where Dax and her former girlfriend from the time when she was a man kissed, was quite a big thing at the time for the Star Trek franchise.
