It seems the jobs will stay where they are. However Tata will be used to cut their cost. So the quality will go down.

      M&S have much to learn.

It's the same mistake a lot of businesses have made in the past, it appears they are doomed to keep repeating themselves.

          Simples

Keep people on and reduce as offshore team grow and replace (offshore team 1 DBA can cover 8 clients etc) - some cost savings passed to client

All will work will until a major indecent happens and original staff have all left

Even if much of the work is carried out in the same building (it wont be, there will be pressure to offshore as much as possible abroad taking M & S intellectual property with it) over time the mix will change, the expensive local hires will be encouraged to leave using a range of techniques and gradually replaced with cheaper replacements from Indian both on intra company transfer visas (with big tax perks) and those who have been here so long they have indefinite leave to remain or British passports.

The quality of the service will dive.

And locals are being expected to compete on price, not quality, with cheaper hires from India.

The whole way the outsourcers, including Tata, operate needs proper public debate and our borders and intelletual property need protecting.

There has got to be incentives for employers to hire and train locals and not fly in cheap imports just to superficially save a few quid in the short term.

It never does though. Many companies have seen the error of their ways in regard to Indian Offshoring. How many execs have been burned by promising massive savings only to realize that after two years of significant Capital Expenditure that not only have costs not gone down but the business is screaming about the poor quality of service. Transition is painful and expensive for the business and you better be sure its going to deliver what it promises.

I see a number of companies have started to insource again in the last few years! M&S are about 20 years behind the curve here.

I've not seen an outsource yet that actually saves money in the long term. At worst it leads to extinction through loss of IP, strategic control and in most cases greater, not less, costs.

We've given away our control over IT strategy and spending, outsourcer can you do it cheaper and better and in line with our needs, err no we've got you over a barrel

Worse try selling to businesses that have outsourced. Customer reckons I've got a great product at a great price and they want to buy it. But the outsourcer will kill the deal every time if they can because they're interested in their business and not mine If they can't kill the deal they'll put technical obstacles in the way, a sort of work to rule. Want any changes their side, that's £500 plus paperwork plus a T&M charge. Want to use an API, nope not if it's not specified by standards and their contract and they'll charge the client 10x what you cost to provide it if they insist

Any third party you engage is solely interested in making as much money as possible out of you.
