    Then you need a history book... and stop reading the daily fail.

      Exactly, the basis, not the lost profits.

        That doesn't contradict it being a protectionist racket; that soundbite isn't mutually exclusive from protectionism.

        "to promote greater social, political and economic harmony among the nations of Western Europe" == protectionism for Western Europe.

          No more protectionist than every other trade block. Average tariffs and barriers are more or less the same in most countries.

          You should check the Australia-US "free trade" deal that forces Australia to buy expensive US pharmaceutical products.
          I'm alright Jack

            Can you provide an example of where the EU is protectionist? i.e. charges huge tariffs on imports to protect internal suppliers? (from Chinese tat might I add)

              That'd be a valid argument if I was using protectionism as an argument - follow the discussion, I'm not.

                Countries inside the racket don't pay the tariffs, which the EU can arbitrarily set for non-EU states.

                What about this aren't you getting?

                  Let's try that again.

                    Do you mean something like this;
                    https://www.theguardian.com/business...rt-talbot-tata

                    Or, say, the average ~37% tariff on Dairy products?;

                    Or something else?
