Boris Johnson said he had spoken to the Ukraine FM who assured that the Russians had murdered the journalist. Bojo assured him that the UK will apply sanctions on Russia.

I think this was a fake murder that went wrong, the fake death was inadvertently found out and the Ukraine security services have egg on their faces.
