I had a look at how many students overstay and not surprisingly data is sparse mainly as the government is too incompetent to collect it - much as they were too incompetent to limit EU migration using it's own rules. But here's some research (based on exit interviews at airports) which I would say is a very poor way to do it:

A few may fall through the cracks e.g. Windrush due to ignorance, but that is the law.
