'Tax on age' to pay for social care being considered for the over-40s

A new levy targeted at the over-40s is being considered by ministers to help solve the social care funding crisis.

Matt Hancock, the Health and Social Care Secretary, told the Telegraph he was “attracted to” a cross-party plan for a compulsory premium deducted from the earnings of the *middle-aged and over-65s to fund the cost of their care in later life.

The proposals, set out by two Commons committees, are based on the system in Germany under which all workers over 40 pay 2.5 per cent of their wages into a pot formally earmarked for social care.

How about a tax on the under 40s to pay for care and damage following drunken nights out.

sounds good, so long as it's not retrospective

It seems to be the reason for politicians to exist, to dream up new ways to tax us. Even if we are already taxed for something they will give it a new name and add that on top.

Nobody stands for less tax anymore. It's not left vs right, it's private vs public.

How about do that same tax on anyone earning over 400k a year? That's fair! Let's not make it left vs right or young vs old. It should be the super rich who should pay!

Gotta say old people moan a lot. What peevs me off is them holding on to homes to sell it off at stupid prices when they haven't done anything to the property in over 15 years. That is the type of people we should tax whilst we are at it.

Yes and we should have a footballers tax whilst we are at it. 200% tax on any footballers income over £100K per week. That'll keep the premiership wage bill down.

If the UK invested in robotics, instead of importing cheap labour, then all would be fine.
