    • Herbert Diess made the gaffe at a conference in Wolfsburg on Tuesday
    • He had been discussing Volkswagen's profits when he said 'Ebit macht frei'
    • His phrase had sounded much like the Nazi death camp slogan 'Arbeit macht frei'
    • VW's history is rooted in Adolf Hitler's backing of the 'people's car' in the 1930s
