    I believe the image is taken by radio telescopes - however, assuming this is black body radiation, while the peak of a extremely hot object may be in the hard x-rays, it will be glowing very brightly at all lower frequencies as well.

    The red light from an object glowing yellow hot is brighter than the red light of an object glowing red hot.

    In Elite: Dangerous it's a user inspired mission to earn your 'explorer' badge to visit Sagittarius A (the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way) and take a screen shot. Here's an example:


    Pretty close considering the game design goes back a few years now.
