    My engine warning light is red and not yellow, so I'm okay!

    No ifs, no buts, fail. So, if a mechanic fixes a problem but doesn't clear down your codes then you're looking at a fail.
    Disconnect the engine warning bulb before going for your MOT... sorted HTH
