Shame. I remember going on one during its first week of service back in 1976.

Have only been on the new electric train once. Seats seemed smaller and there was no buffet car.

Brexiteers remind me of religious fanatics, only faith, no facts.

Demand increased - those old trains would not have coped, ticket prices would have to be even higher than they are now, which is already crazy high

    The guy in the interview

"Trains are part of the British psyche, we invented them we made them run properly"

“We've always defined ourselves by the ability to overcome the impossible. And we count these moments. These moments when we dare to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars, to make the unknown known. We count these moments as our proudest achievements. But we lost all that. Or perhaps we've just forgotten that we are still pioneers. And we've barely begun. And that our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, because our destiny lies above us.”

Sad news I have to say - I've often diverted a bit north to Reading in order to get one into London - only 22 minutes at a top speed of 125mph. And as a boy I used to time the quarter-mile posts to ensure it was keeping the correct speed (3600/(125*4)) = 7.2 seconds

Still they've never been quite the same since they replaced the screaming Vanenta engines with quieter MTU ones

Yes the howl used to be ear splitting.

The luxury of aircon back in 1976 was remarkable.

The seats on the Hirohito's Revenge units are disgraceful.

    Like sitting on a plank.

Not to mention the joy of figuring out whether or not you're in a carriage where the doors will open to let you off.
    When the fun stops, STOP.
